Finally went "Bang"
On my last 5th trip since May i took my Garand to Kents Store, Virginia. I purchased it about 20 years ago from a Law Professor at West Point. It is a '53 Springfield. The owner had two of them and mine has a couple very small handling marks and he kept the other one.
Back in '61 I qualified as Expert at Ft Jackson. Not sure if I could do that today. The bull is 6" at 100yds and i was using some '78 greek ammo. My friend and good neighbor Bill let me use his 200 yd range. He has 14 acres but I was a little afraid to use it (No berm) I picked out a big old oak tree on my property for a backstop and put up some 2x4 plywood and painted it.
Could not remember if I touched the rear sight when I cleaned it years ago. I lucked out and 1st shot was on the paper next to the bull. I suspect the rifle is a tack driver that is more capible than me. I have a bad habit of pulling them to the right. Comes from shooting those old 12ga 37 Winchesters and flinching a little i think. Boy do they hurt your shoulder. Next spring the Lord willing , I will shoot some more and try to refine my act.
I have all the M-5 Bayonets made for the rifle and a nice Utica with flaming bomb. Rifle, bayonets and a ton of ammo will go to my nephew who is a CSM at Ft Bragg. He trains SF troops and lives on the dark side. He does not know this and will be in charge of my Honor Guard when the time comes in Louisa, Virginia.
My right arm is starting to feel better. I had visions of six months of PT. Tomorrow I will stay away from the Key Board and try to do something useful. —————-Ray

Congrats, great rifle and story, and keeping it in the family makes even more so

Very nice Ray. Looks like your M1 is in excellent condition and your shooting skills are doing pretty good too.

Nice rifle and nice shooting ,,
being on the key board is USEFUL , it helps all the younger folk learn and
remember what went on before their time and hopefully keep the bad from happening again
GOD BLESS and Merry Christmas

For not shooting it for a while, and a stiff arm, it looks like you are on target, good shooting. There is just something about shooting an M1 Grand that’s a hoot.
Have a Merry Christmas.3 -
Waltermoe , I probably confused you folks. I purchased the M-1 from a Law Professor at West Point about 20 yrs ago and never had a chance to shoot it until a few weeks ago in Kents Store, Virginia. Shoulder was not sore while shooting M-1. When I returned to NY home I put a new battery in my truck and really messed up my shoulder. It was extremely painful but is much better now. I had visions of six months of PT and having my Hernia Operation rescheduled. ———Ray
