Is it made by Miroku? My 1892 Winchester marked Roy Rogers in .45 Colt is and it is a joy to shoot with cast bullets. As for the 44-40, it was killing deer and men long before you and I were born. Brass & bullets are available on the auction side. The 38-40 is no slouch either, mine is an 1889 Marlin that shoots like a .41 magnum. I use both 40 S&W jacketed bullets or home cast. Those 170 grain 40's really open up a can of tomatoes! Let us know what you decide….

44-40 in a 92 winchester was a popular deer gun when i was growing up in West Virginia circa 1950s, 60s

Doubtful you would notice much difference between 44-40 and 38-40 (which is actually .40 cal.)….

Plenty of power, easy on the shoulder and ears.

That is what I like to hear. I'm extremely recoil sensitive for some reason.

My 38-40 is an original 1881 and is a family heirloom. I had Bert H give me an estimate on value, and it came back at around 20,000 dollars. That was a few years ago. It is all original and my great, great, grandfather was the original purchaser of the rife. It has the original sales receipt and a box of original bullets, minus two. I had posted pictures of it on here years ago. It even has the cleaning rods in the stock butt. I hunted with it twice and only shot it once. My son is next in line to inherit it. I was going to loan it to the Cody Museum, but decided not to do so, because I was afraid something would happen to it in transport. My father was also highly against it, and since he is still around, I honored his wishes.
