night vision scope
anybody got a simple night vision scope that works well or know of one to buy?
suggestions?
I would use it to kill hogs at nighttime

Although there are some fine night vision scopes on the market, a gun would work better to kill hogs, day or night. Don

Wow. DG left the door open right there. Grins.

for the smart-azzes I would be mounting it on a rifle in order to shoot the hogs

looking at these

I have the Sightmark wraith mini it does a good job for the price but is designed to mount on a AR

I would stay away from the ATN I had reliability problems with the ones I had.

Sightmark Wraith 44k on my Ruger American they make a bolt gun mount for that on biggest draw back is it uses AA batteries I rigged mine to use a external battery and it is

Sightmark 44k mini

thanks
is this what you have?

the USB cords are for the external battery pack I use a Battery from amazon called energyQC it fits 1" scope rings and use a magnetic charging cable to hook to the unit so if the cable gets hung on something it doenst hurt the port on the unit
3 -
that is the handheld not the scope mount unit
3 -
They have 2 magnification choices mine is the 2x-16 I wish I had gotten the 4x-32
3 -
I use a thermal camera that plugs into my smart phone for spotting
6 -
Another hint is mount your IR light as far foward and under the barrel as possible it helps get a quicker second shot because the smoke from the shot will temporary wash out your view

thanks buddy

I bought this for myself for Christmas. I’m going to try it on my pcp in the backyard. It looks kinda cumbersome but for less than 100 I got two batteries and a InfaRed light… and I can keep my glass on for the daytime , in theory it should work …

let me know how it works

Tell me about your thermal camera for spotting/scanning that you use with your smart phone?
Reason I ask is I use a Bushnell Monocular with a added on IR so as I do not have to spot scan with my NV rifle. The Bushnell monocular is lighter weight and more user friendly than scanning with the Rifles NV scope. You can do some searching at the Bushnell.com site for their NV monoculars. I would prefer IR thermal for scanning but the price is out of sight for thermal stuff that I seen.
I went with Pulsar Night Vision (NV) couple years ago after lots of reviewing and comments from the guys on GB. I also use the same scope in the daytime. Really a good scope but has a learning curve. Most NV stuff can be used Day/night whereas IR is usually for night only.
Here is a link to my previous questions, etc.

I got the Infiray T2 pro you can get a android or a Iphone version its a small camera that plugs into your phone and uses your phone's screen for viewing about 400.00 works great for scanning a area.

Sightmark is only rated to 308 if your going to use the 300wsm you may want to spend a little more and get the Pulsar it's rate to 375 H&H and Outdoor Legacy is a good outfit to deal with. I stayed away from units with the built in IR light because they would be illegal to hunt deer with in some of the states I hunt in

Thanks guys I learned something. We can hunt coyotes at night no hogs here.

after trying the night vision and was disappointed I went with pulsar thermal.

Some things to consider:
Some of the NV scopes are only rated to 308 max recoil.
The Pulsar C50 is rated for magnums but if you are not locked onto a rifle yet, a lesser recoil caliber such as 308, 243, 223 would be more user friendly and not punish the scope (and you). I went with the Pulsar because I already had a very accurate Win 70, 30;06 that I reload for that was used as hunting rifle with a synthetic stock (not a safe queen) and it does not have a severe felt recoil. I rigged the scope using Leupold QR 30mm rings, Super HIgh due to the C50 scope having a large diameter approx 74mm front bell. I also rigged the rifle where I can install another lighter regular hunting scope as desired by using QR med rings on a 2.5x10 Bushnell 4500 elite. The Pulsar C50 has different selections for windage and elevation and if picatinny rails and rings are used the scope can be transferred from rifle to rifle and just select the A,B,C,D, that was selected for other rifle's zero (no re-zeroing required for the other rifle when the scope is swapped) I may eventually go to the Picatinny system so as I can swap the C50 onto other rifles such a Short action 308 and or 223 as desired and not even have to re-zero the scope.

I'm considering a thermal for spotting/scanning.
Did not go with thermal for scope because I wanted Day and Night use of the scope.
Usually the first thing I see when SLOW SCANNING at the longer distances with the NV stuff is bright eyes instead of the animal then have to do the zooming and adjusting to what is behind the eyes.
I suspect with thermal I could scan faster and just look for the red heat detect at first instead of eyes glowing.

who told you that you couldn’t use a thermal in the day time? They work great in the day, just a little different like not pointing at the sun. You should come here and try a good one out . I wasted a lot of money and time on night vision when I should have started with thermal. I’ll give you another little secret that nobody is saying. There is two different lights for night vision. A 825 IR and a 940 IR. The hogs can see the 825 spectrum and run. I learned that then spent more time and money on the 940 spectrum light. That one you can shine right at them and they can’t see it and it doesn’t bother them at all. How many people knew this. I have hog hunted with both and I wish there had been someone to talk to before I wasted all the time and money on night vision. I still have all the lights and batteries John if you want them.

I've also noticed some animals really get nervous when they see the 825 spectrum IR.
Seems if the red lights eye is stationery like on a Game Camera some animals don't get really nervous/cautious as soon, but if it's moving around like on a NV scope it's gets their attention if the animal is not far away. (seems when they see/detect a moving red eye from a scope or spotter they think danger and get a heads up fast.
You say: I have hog hunted with both and I wish there had been someone to talk to before I wasted all the time and money on night vision.
Yes, experience is: what you get when what you got is not really what you wanted. Night hunting is a learning experience and old hogs that have seen their friends die seem to stay nervous constantly.
NV (day/night) is less expensive as compared to IR but if you are really really serious about night hunting think about going with IR.
Seen a Advertisement from Pulsar awhile back, a new IR scope that see's back into the brush in daytime with enough detail to maybe ID what type animal. (few thousand dollars price range)
You can go to the Pulsar site and review their stuff.
Also you can review prices and get info from OUTDOOR LEGACY. (very good people)
