I think you commit to a monthly pledge of money, say 19.95 per month for one year.

I bet the actual need gets a very small portion of the money

That is why we only contribute to local charities nowadays. That cancer shoot I mention on here every year goes to a local fund and all contributions,100%, go to the cancer patients. The first few years the funds went to the major cancer charity in the country and then we saw reports that only 62% was spent on cancer and the rest on staff and fundraising efforts. Keeping it local means we get to see the results instead of fundraising letters. Bob

Charitable giving has been a big mistake here. Phone rings constantly, many emails, & PO box full of of mail wanting you to give. Charities promise they won't disclose donors and they flat out lie. They sell lists of donors and make big money just for the lists. Have heard donor lists sell for big money on the dark web.

You cant trust anyone here even the PD charities.

Sadly to many have ben exposed over time where 70 /80 % of donations go for salary's of the overseers and charity fund rasers them self and just penny's on the dollar make to the needy people

Same With the billions of dollars the USA gives to other country's I will guess many goes into the pockets of the"leaders " and a big % back under the table to the politicans here

We help family members directly, no Go Fund Me, they keep a percentage. At the present our niece is undergoing kemo, no insurance. Another family member is a single mother of 3. My best friend since '58 past last year with no burial insurance. We helped both our grand daughters through the Police Academy. My M. I. L. lived with us for six years until Julie got cancer, (she is 16 years free). And we took in a stray cat 5 years ago!!! I could go on…..But, I still feel a little guilty passing the bell ringers A guy can only do so much. Eddie

One source that researches and ranks "charities" is…

I made the mistake years back by donating to a couple of charities and putting my return address on the return envelope. I will not give to charities that try to guilt you in to giving. They send you a nickel and say they will double your donation, that doesn’t even make sense, or they send you gifts thinking you will give.
There are a couple charities I give too,,but I have checked them out before I gave.
Saying is true that charity begins at home.

Administrative fees. One reason I never donate to causes or charities at the check out in Wal-Mart or bass pro etc is how long do they pile up those donations and presumably collect interest before they turn them over. Is it the end of the quarter, week, month, year?

The only thing I would ever give to is Samaritan's purse or Tunnels to Towers.

I think church is where charity belongs. When the government started controlling things, naming what a charity was, giving tax exempt status to what was a charity……doling out the term "non profit" to things that had board members making millions…..it all went downhill.

My daughter took singing lessons from an outfit in a nearby small town. They had a great singing teacher, but there were a few guys working with this outfit that were SUPER SHADY. One evening I was speaking with a lady and she started going on about her personal business and how she was divorcing her husband…I checked it off as small town gossip. Then she starts telling me about her "boyfriend" that was the drummer at this facility that taught music….and how they were involved in the church. She then goes on to tell me she can get me all the free food I want. They run the pantry and they have plenty of donations. I swear….I didn't know this nut job for FIVE MINUTES and she is bragging about how much free food she can give me. I was sick.

I actually took my daughter out of the school after that encounter. It was unnerving. I'm sure there are a lot of charitable outfits out there….but the people that NEED charity who end up rising up into the ranks of being the ones to help others rarely have the character to handle the task.
