He doesn't care if they win a ring. As long as they are competitive and keep butts in seats they are making money for him. Win a ring and fans will expect that to happen on a regular basis which costs money. He's treating it like a business.
They have a loyal fan base that will sell out the stadium, buy the merch and watch the games on TV. There are enough haters that they will buy the seats to watch them lose or tune in for the same reason.
