If you're buying a handgun from out of state and you are in CA the best approach is to visit your FFL and confirm with him specifically that a particular gun is on the CA "safe roster" - meaning the exact model. With respect to the Python, I believe the only one currently allowed in via FFL is the stainless model, that may be what the "s" means in the model designation. Also, only the 6" version is allowed in, here's a link: http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/safeguns_resp.asp
Here's further discussion, it evidently gets a bit complicated as to which 6" stainless is OK:

Don't try to ascribe any logic to this, it's all about gun control and making manufacturers pay to play.0 -

BTW for some reason this link does not work but if you google CA doj guns it takes you right to the website where that link is--maybe they are having an issue.
according to the list the only Python that is on their list is the
I3060CS Python (silver) / Stainless Steel Revolver 6" .357 Magnum 7/24/2011 <----good until this date. If Colt doesn't resubmit it then it is off the list-and since Colt doesn't even make Pythons anymore they may or may not resubmit. BUT if you read the first section of the Roster:
Effective January 1, 2001, no handgun may be manufactured within California, imported into California for sale, lent, given, kept for sale, or offered/exposed for sale unless that handgun model has passed firing, safety, and drop tests and is certified for sale in California by the Department of Justice.
---> Private party transfers, curio/relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement.
mark christian would be the guy to ask--I don't know if that private party part is stricktly for in state sales or if it also exempts out of state on NON curio/relic handguns.0 -
Private party transfers in Cal can only be between 2 parties living in Cal. Someone from outside Cal cannot bring a gun into Cal for a PPT. 0 -
There also seems to be some discussion as to whether the CA OK applies to the stainless Python in general or just the "Python Elite". If getting a Python (any Python) is the goal my approach would be to either buy a C & R eligible Python or have one sent to an intermediary FFL (out of state) who'd convert the gun to single action only - each is exempt from "the roster". The DA sear can be refitted after the gun comes into CA and finishes the 10 day wait. 0 -
Finding a C&R eligible Python may be difficult since Colt didnt start making them until 1955, so the vast majority are not C&R eligible and those made before 1960 would be very expensive.
I would just go to a live auction. I see Pythons all the time at auctions in all the barrel lengths, finishes etc and they are exempt from the "approved" list since they are being handled as PPT's.0
