I've have a rifle I think German, heavy as hell. The stock goes all the way to the end of the barrel. The shells feed into the side like a carbine the only markings without taking it apart are WAFFENBGIK BERN AND THE SER NUMBER. The action and trigger are very smooth. I don't even have any idea what cal it is and there are no dates.

If it says Bern on it , it is Swiss produced, although point of delivery is anyones guess. Is it a turnbolt or a STRAIGHT PULL? If turnbolt them perhaps an 1893 Mannlicher (it was full stocked, and the only non Swiss design used for many years) but I would guess that if it is a streaight pull, it's a variant of the Schmidt-Rubin rifle...most likely a K-31. Pictures would really help.

From your description, it appears you have one of the Swiss Vetterli models. I got this photo off the net, compare it to your rifle.

1KYDSTR- even the 1893 Swiss Mannlicher was straight pull.

Many models of Vetterli were made. 1878, 1869/71, and 1881 being the most commonly encountered. Chambered in 10.4X38.4RF. CF conversions are fairly easy, use reformed 8mm Lebel or 348 Win brass and a .429" (nominal) bullet.

Very mild, fun shooters, great pieces to spark conversation at the range.
