A early one could be a square butt. Can you see the back edge of the grip frame at the bottom of the grips [?]
The later ones are round butt with grips that make thes look like square butt frames.

it has th4 8 3/8 barrel if that helps

Mike, Your 617 no-dash was built between 1989 and 1993 and will have the square butt. The square butt was still being used until 1995-96.

As mentioned, the round butt frames still look like square butt guns due to the grips that are made to cover the rounded lower part of the grip.

I think all the early ones (which would include yours) were square butt.

I think all the current production ones are round butt.

If you want to be 100% sure, just take off the grips with a screwdriver and look at the gun butt:
