pre-'64 M-70 screw pressures
What should the screw pressures be on the three receiver screws on a pre-'64 M-70 Varmint in .243? I hear varied opinions and want to get this rifle to shoot as well as it should.

90 -100 inch pounds.

62fuelie,
Hello, and Welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.
I run the torque on the stock bolts at 55-60 inch-pounds. The best way to get consistancy, would be to pillar bed, but if your rifle is all original, then it would tarnish the collector value.

For what it's worth, the first load I tried in my .243 Varmint M70 when I bought it in 1960, was 40 gr. of H4895 with the 75 gr. Sierra HP in RP cases and CCI primers. It shot so well that I never saw reason to change it.
BTW: The powder was military surplus I got from the local gun shop (bring your own container!) and I got the primers from the DCM (Director of Civilian Marksmanship).0 -
That really brings back memories, my favorite was 45 grains of salvage 4831 and a Sierra 85 grain HPBT in W-W cases and CCI large rifle primers in a Remington 700. Powder went home in a bag and got put in a coffee can.quote:Originally posted by Ambrose
