Winchester Model 70 pre64 action
I currently have a Winchester Model 70 manufactured in 1950 based on serial number 145xxx. It has been modified with a Christenson Arms heavy Graphite barrel and a Custom Phagen stock. It was also re-chambered to a 25-06, prior to purchase. The stock is VERY nice and I am looking for another that I can beat up when I go hunting, so as not to scratch the one that is on it. There are a few here on gun broker but I am not sure about fit since it has the heavy barrel. Can I purchase a stock that is made to fit a 375 H&H or 300? Some people tell me that the action is larger and the 25-06 (long action) won't fit. Would I be able to open up the channel on a synthetic stock made for the standard weight barrel? My barrel is 1.25" at the receiver and has a minimal taper.Any input would be greatly appreciated.[8)]

The H&H cartridges are made on the "Magnum" M-70 action which is longer than the "standard" action which was set up on the '06 cartridge length. If you can find a stock made for the M-70 Varmint Model 70 it may be closer to fitting the barrel you have as they were made with a heavy barrel. 0 -
All of the pre-64 receivers, whether for short cartridges like the .308, standard like the .30/06, or the magnum .300 H&H and .375 H&H, were the same length. The front bottom of the receiver was milled away for the magnum cartridges and the magazine box and the bolt stops were different, one from another. The trigger guard/floor plate assembly were the same also.
This has been discussed on other posts.
BTW: You typed Phagen; did you mean Fajen?0 -
Thanks for the information, and yes, my mistake it is spelled Fajen. 0 -
Yep..All receivers from .22 Hornet to .458 were the same.. In addition to the differences Ambrose mentioned, the bolt-face was case specific.. 0 -
Question... Would any of the differences that have been mentioned affect the fit of the gun into the stock? 0 -
Except for the barrel diameter, they'll all fit.. Pre-war M. 70's had a slightly longer tang, so you would only need to lengthen the inletting at that point..
Thought I'd add this.. When I ordered stocks for a model 70 from Fagen, you would specify featherweight, standard, varmint,etc.. The barrel channel would be cut accordingly.. I don't know what offerings are out there now..0
