U.S. Springfield
I have an old U.S. Springfield marked as such, model 1884. Serial number 41393. Manufactured 1875. I assume the model number was stamped on the rifle after it was converted to a more modern cartridge rifle. The groove for the ram rod is very visible and interestingly there are three grooves carved acoss the ram rod groove I assume as recognition for something.
Any comments ?

Your rifle was not converted. It was manufactured as a .45-70 Trapdoor rifle. It originally had a breechblock marked "US Model 1873" but it was replaced with a Model 1884, possibly during an arsenal upgrade. Pictures would help to determine other upgraded parts (trigger, rear sight, etc.). 0 -
Once again my wife will try to figure out how to ost pictures from photobucket, right now. 0 -

You probably misread the serial number. Dollars to
donuts it should be 41393X (413,000 range) as opposed
to 41393. The last digit often gets battered by the
thumb latch and can be hard to see, especially on a
gun that has seen a lot of use. A 41,000 range receiver
will be the "narrow" one and even with the barrel. A 413,000
range receiver will be slightly wider than the barrel. The
stock will also be inletted differently for the two.
Besides the cut notches (which is anybodys guess) did you
have a specific question? The rifle is pretty rough as Model
1884's are usually found in better condition than the
earlier 1873 Models.

U R correct 413931. No I did not have any specific questions. Is there any money value to the gun? What caliber is this?
Thank You,

Johnny is correct. That's a Model 1884 with all of the correct features. It's in rough shape and the Buffington sight is broken. It's .45-70 caliber as I stated above. It was manufactured in 1888. The notches are meaningless and anyone's guess.
Yes, it has value. In its present, uncleaned condition, it would probably bring in the $450-$500 range.0 -
My wife got the photobucket fixed up for me and took the pics. She was doing the typing with me behind her. SHE wanted to know of the value and in no uncertain terms told me this was her gun, since it was her great grandpa's gun. I retreived it from her dad's house for a wall hanger over our fireplace when we had one.
Thanks all for the info.0 -
I'd put value a little lower, I hate to say... I bought my trapdoor in a bit better shape for $475. I'd say in that condition, $400 tops, probably more like $300.
Better as a wall hanger and conversation piece and family memento, might or might not shoot, but I wouldn't want to try it.
Since no one has addressed the notches, my gut reaction is that the ramrod (when present) was working loose, so someone cut notches in the stock to insert wedges under it; or else if the barrel bands are missing, someone once used the notches to serve as an anchor point to make a rope or leather wrapping in place of- fairly common for Indians for instance. Not the notches per se, but the wrappings.0 -
Glad to hear you are going for the wallhanger approach! Nice to have a piece like that with some family history as well...good for you for giving it a venue! As mentioned, it is the right configuration and serial number range for the model. Also, as mentioned, it is well beyond the shootable condition level...way too much deep rust in the chamber and I assume the trigger isn't moving anymore from the pics. Nice family momento. Value would be $300 at best. There are three at the Cabella's by me in good to excellent condition WITH the cartouches etc...Between $550 and $650 asking price for those with no takers I have seen for at least a month I have been watching them. 0
