Removing Phosphate Finish on Rifle
Hey guys, I have a question about removing a phosphate finish on a rifle, if it's even possible. I'm sorry to be so ignorant on the subject, but I've never had to deal with it before. Can it be done?
also, if a gun part has "DP" stamped on it, why is it difficult to refurbish it back into a working rifle? AHH, ignorance is bliss! Or so I thought!! [:I]

DP is a big question mark insofar as to what may have rendered it unsuitable for military use. The degrees of unshootability range from 0 to 10. You just never know. It could have been cosmetic issues, or it could be a badly heat treated reciever; one will offer no issues, and the other could get you killed. 0 -
To remove the Parkerizing you might try first vapor blasting with plastic beads. If that doesn't work try sandblasting. 0 -
I recommend blasting w aluminum oxide
Don't use glass beads-toxic
The plastic ones have not been aggressive enough for me, but that may be my compressor.

The rifle in question wouldn't happen to be a Lee-Enfield (No.1 Mk III or No.4 Mk I), would it?
That's the first thing that came to mind, when you said that it was marked "DP".0 -
Thanks for the info guys and, yes, to the last question, it IS a Mk1 #3 enfield. 0 -
DP rifles have been intentionally "demilled"- they are no longer a firearm, are are intended to be unrestorable to firing status. Since they are not firearms, the security and accountability required for firearms does not apply. In some cases, actions are welded, cut, etc etc. Can one be restored to safe firing condition? With a tool and die makers shop, and enough money, you can make a rifle out of beer cans. Question is whether it is worth it? It is also likely that a DP that is restored to shooting status BY AN UNLICENSED PERSON would be considered to have been "manufactured"- legal to own, but never to be sold. 0
