Rebarrel of 98K
got a mil replacement 98k barrel from GPcorp and screwded it on my receiver and set headspace with go/no guages//the sites are now at about 1 oclock with the correct headspace(guaged)/Should I heat the sites and turn the site to 12 oclock.or remove and scope mount the rifle or is there some method of lathe cutting to acomplish my site alaignment. you guys are always great so thanks upfront//mike

with mausers (and a lot of others) you have a 1/360 chance of getting a correctly 'timed' barrel as a replacement. If head space is correct first remove the front sight blade and rear sight slide, there are screws underneath them. remove the screws and then heat the barrel untill the solder 'flows', you can now rotate them to 12:00. they might still be tight and require some force to do this. 0 -
The proper way to do this would require a lathe to cut back the chamber end of the barrel and then recut the chamber to headspace. How tight did you turn it to get the correct headspace and was there any gap between the barrel and action? I doubt there's enough slack to go ahead and crank it until the sights are at 12:00 but if so, it could then be reamed to make the headspace correct. 0 -
Check the relief cut in the chamber for the extractor claw. This is also likely "out of time". Properly headspaced, this relief would also need to be deepened for the extractor to grip the base of the shell. 0 -
If the gun headspaces properly and the barrel is tightened down sufficiently, then heating the sights and re-aligning is fine. It is, after all, how they were originally installed.
Worst case, you may need to completely remove, sand, clean, flux, and re-solder.
I would think of using some heat control paste or a heat sink at the rear to prevent overheating the receiver, or else marking where the sights need to be, and removing the barrel to do the work. The barrel steel is soft, but the hardened receiver can be damaged by uneven reheating.0 -
I've always found Bbls like this to be about .010 long between the end of the Bbl and the shoulder that comes up against the end of the receiver. They are made that way so you can trim the end of the Bbl to get the correct sight timing. You'll need to finish ream the chamber. 0 -
sounds like the easiest/cheapest solution for me is to heat and turn the sites///thanks all.. lots of good help/mike 0
