    My opinion?

    1. EVERY AR-15 is technically a ".22"!

    2. The concept here isn't new. .22LR conversion units have been available for AR-15 guns for at least 20 years. You can still get them for around $200 and they do an OK job, with several limitations I won't get into right now.

    3. What is new is that now several manufacturers (Colt/Umarex, Smith and Wesson, etc) are putting out .22LR guns that *LOOK* like AR-15s and share SOME of the external parts commonality, but aren't really AR-15 guns.

These guns do what they are supposed to do, namely give you the look and most of the feel of an AR-15 using .22LR ammo, though they aren't true caliber conversions for the AR-15 (ie you can't slap ANY AR-15 part on there, and you can't convert calibers to anything other than .22LR).

    4. I agree, these are great for kids who want something like they have in their "Call of Duty" videogame, but who probably are better off without a "real" AR-15!

    5. If you want something a little better than the above (but more costly) you can get a dedicated .22LR upper for your AR-15. Its sort of the same idea as the AR/22 guns, but you are retaining the EXACT lower of your AR-15 (including TRIGGER, CONTROLS, and STOCK) and can easily caliber convert back to .223 or any other caliber upper you have handy.

    6. 223 ammo retails for about $0.22 per round right now for cheapy steel case Russian ammo, and you go up from there up to about $0.30 per round for quality brass case FMJ ammo.

I like the CMMG dedicated 22 lr upper. The Smith & Colt are OK but I think the dedicated upper comes closest to original and does best. In CA we have AW laws that apply to centerfire rifles but not rimfire, aside from the accuracy difference I'd prefer to not press my luck convincing LE that my AR with rimfire insert is OK - I think I'd be OK, but at $350.00 or so for the upper WTH.

From what I've seen the Sig 522 comes closest to the centerfire original.

The kids today have so much more by way of fun guns to shoot - when I started it was slow progression from single shot to bolt to that new fangled Nylon 66. [;)]

currently i have two S&W's 15/22's, a TacSol .22 Dedicated upper and two Ciener kits i use in my old AR-15's with the 1-12 twist.

the TacSol and S&W with threaded barrel are the most reliable and accurate of all, plus they will eat any .22 LR ammo that i have fed them. sure wish they were available when i was a kid !!
