i have recently purchased a s&w k-38 with an 8 3/8in barrel what is this firearm worth?

  Depends on condition, year of manufacture, and whether or not it comes with the original box and paperwork.
  
  Maybe $300-400, if its a typical used/worn "shooter".
  
  A little more if its in excellent shape.
  
  And if its an early vintage gun in mint (unfired) condition with the original box with papers, you could be talking quite a bit more.
  
  If you want a better estimate, post good well-lit pictures of the gun from all angles. Serial number could help identify the date of production, but at least give the exact model number (should be located inside the frame under the barrel when you open the gun).
