Shellac wood finish is orig to all native (wood-stocked) Russkie arms. They also applied it to all WW2 German weapons which they captured/refurbished.

Pretty sure that it was put on when they were "re-arsenaled." That is, if you are talking about the nice, shiny ones that are widely available. It was also done on the SVT's that were imported a few years ago. I have some old ones that have both oil and shellac finish, so who knows? My guess is that after the finish wore off, the soldiers oiled them.
    Cheers, Tom

I'm pretty sure that all the "re-arsenalled" Mosin Nagants have been refinished.

That's both the wood AND metal.
