Finish on Russian Surplus Rifles
Is the shelack on the Mosin Nagant and the SKS original or was it put on there for storage?I would think the wood was originaly oiled down like the others of the time.

Shellac wood finish is orig to all native (wood-stocked) Russkie arms. They also applied it to all WW2 German weapons which they captured/refurbished. 0 -
Pretty sure that it was put on when they were "re-arsenaled." That is, if you are talking about the nice, shiny ones that are widely available. It was also done on the SVT's that were imported a few years ago. I have some old ones that have both oil and shellac finish, so who knows? My guess is that after the finish wore off, the soldiers oiled them.

I'm pretty sure that all the "re-arsenalled" Mosin Nagants have been refinished.
That's both the wood AND metal.0
