Winchester Model 63 buttstock removal
I've got a Winchester Model 63. It's no collector and am wanting to refinish the stock and forend. I've got the forend off no problem. but the buttstock is another question. Do I need a specialized tool to remove the stock? I have the buttplate off and see the magazine tube housing within what appears to be a hollow stock screw? has a cut on both sides where a big screw driver (forked) would fit. Any advice?

This is a diagram of the rifle and if you download it into your desktop you will be able to zoom in and see the internal workings of the magazine tube. The tube is threaded into the receiver and if you remove the works you will see the threads. I don't see anything holding the stock in place except the item that looks like a bushing (item 8 stock screw) and may require that you use a large screw driver or other device you can conceive to turn the magazine out of the receiver. If you soak the threads in the receiver with Kroil and let it set it may be easyer to remove. No expert just what information I could get out of the diagram.

swampthing, I took an old Taiwan made 12 point deepwell socket the same diameter as that nut, and put it to the grinder to make two tabs to fit the notches. Had to Dremel the "points" of the socket to make it fit over the tube.
Clean and oil the threads when you get it off, careful not to cross thread, and "snug" is the key word putting it back on.[;)]0 -

I'm looking it all over right now.

Great ideas! And I've got just the p.o.s. socket to modify.0
