Barrel Bedding tools
I'm looking at purchasing a barrel bedding tool set. I've looked over what MidwayUSA and Brownells has to offer. Both have kits by Gunline. Do you gys keep an entire kit or do you buy separate scrapers with different diameters? I am not starting gunstocs from scratch but rather am fitting barrels to semi-inletted stocks. Please advise.

I am going to buy a set of barrel bedding/barrel channel scraping tools. I've seen a set sold by Gunline but not too many others out there. They have a set with a variety of diameter cutters. I also see indivicual tools that two handles with a u-shaped shank and a cutter. What's the easiest to use for a beginner. Or what works best in your view? Right now I am fitting a new forend to my Winchester Model 55. I had the forend duplicated and need to move some material out to make it fit right and tight. Please advise. 0 -
Gunline offers 2 different styles of barrel bedding tools.
There is the two handed kind and those do not have interchangeable blades. So you would have to buy a new tool for each size barrel you are working on. They also make the barrel bedder Jr. This is a one handed tool and you can buy different sized blades to put onto it. Personally, I like the feel and operation of the two handed tool, but it is cheaper to go with the Jr. model.0 -
I use some bedding tools by gunline.(3 sizes) But when it gets down to close I generally make scrapers from scraps of flat spring stock I get from dixie. You'll find over time that you use more of the tools you make than the production compromise ones.
I make contour cutters out of old" wood paddle bit drill bits" then set em in the mill and get my starting barrel channel cut quick and clean0 -
I do the bulk of the barrel bedding work with small sanding drums on my Dremel. Yes I have bought and made assorted scrapers over the years but, the sanding drums move a lot of sawdust quickly and get me to where the scrapers and sandpaper come into play. If I had to chose between the Dremel and the rest; I'd choose the Dremel. 0 -
+1 on the Dremel especially on the final fitting. I also use the Gunline 2 handle cutters 0
