Remington Model 12 Smoothbore Barrel Extension
Today I saw a Remington slide action rifle in 22 LR. The last patent date is 1912 so I assume it is a model 12. What is different is the knurreled screw on smoothbore extension on the end of the barrel. This is about 4" long. Is this factory or something someone added? What would the purpose be for this? The rest of the barrel is rifled in the usual fashion. I apologize for the quality of the pics but that is the best I could with the light conditions. Any info will be appreciated.

I have a Kar 88 7mm sporter with close to the same thing, The former owner said it was for a suppressor.
Are there any European proof marks on the rifle?0 -
it is a thread protector..suppressors were common to buy before 1934 in sporting goods or hardwear stores till the gubermint made them verboten[V] 0 -
Most likely for a suppressor/silencer. There were no laws porhibiting them until the 1930's. Maximum silencers were freely sold over the counter and by mail order.
It kind of looks like a crude job, probably aftermarket rather then factory original.0 -
