I am not a Model 1897 mechanic... hopefully one of our resident gunsmiths can answer your question/dilemma.

A thought just crossed my mind... there are lots of Cowboy Action Shooters out there that use Model 1897s. You might try contacting your local chapter to see if they can help you.

do you have the magazine tube seated all the way, the 2 'arrows' should be 'point to point'.

    Mike,

No alignment arrows on the Model 1897... that was a Model 1912 innovation.

Is the trigger assy in already ?

Sounds like you are hanginging the sear on the bolt carrier in trying to fully cycle the bolt.

I usually put the screw in with the bolt 3/4 closed.

You should be only messing with a bare receiver with hammer installed at this point, no magazine, stock or barrel.

So the carrier and hammer assembly goes in first, then the bolt? I honestly can't tell that I'm doing anything wrong. Everything seems to go together just fine, but something isn't meshing properly inside.

I think I've got it narrowed down to the main problem. Everything goes together just fine, except the magazine tube. When it's fully seated and locked in place, the action won't open fully. When you push the pin out, and turn the magazine tube half way out, the action functions fine. I think, somehow, the magazine tube, or the cap on the end, got turned 1/2 turn out. Don't know how yet, but that's the only thing holding it up now.
