Nikon Prostaff "Rimfire"
I know the answer seems obvious. But can I put a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4x scope on my 45-70 Guide Gun? I'm looking for a fixed 4x for the guide gun and I already have a NIB Nikon Prostaff sitting on the shelf for 2 years just collecting dust. I'm just worried because it says "Rimfire" it won't handle the recoil. I guess there is only one way to really find out. What do you guys think?

Unless you don't care if you break it or not, I wouldn't take the chance. Scopes meant for rimfire rifles aren't optimized for the shock and concussion that a 45-70 cartridge creates, IMHO.
Years ago I had a number of the old Bushnell "Command Post" scopes. I made the mistake of mounting one on a hard kicking 7mm Magnum rifle. After about 3 shots the scope was toast, all the innards were loose inside and it rattled like a can of beans.0 -
I'd call Nikon about it. Most rimfire scopes just have the parallax set closer than rifle ones. 0 -

If I had an extra rimfire scope sitting around my solution would be to go out and buy a rimfire rifle. [;)]
I have a Marlin Guide Gun and with reloads it gives you a good pop. I don't know if the rimfire scope would survive, but I bet the eye relief is too short and you'll get bumped on the forehead.0 -
Ac cording to the website the eye relief is 4.1". I think the only reason it's a Rimfire series is the paralex is set to 50 yards and it's only 32 mm. All the other prostaffs are 40mm and up. 0 -
The Weaver Classic K-Series Rifle Scopes are always a good choice, tough and built like a tank they can take abuse and recoil and were used by the military as well. 0 -
1. Call Nikon and ask them.
2. If Nikon says this is not advisable, I'd think you should be able to TRADE a NIB Nikon scope for a decent centerfire one.0 -
dfletcher had an indirect solution that will cost a little bit, but it has merit.
I figured if you had a 22 you liked, you would have put the scope on it to try it out. EVERYONE should own a 22 rimfire, and if you wanted to stay with Marlin, the model 39 is very sweet.
Please shoot a tube from your 45-70 for me. I've always loved the gun but couldn't afford another kickmaster.0
