J frame Smith DOM
I just bought a nickel S&W M-49 Bodyguard from a friend of mine for 350 bucks. He said he bought it new several years ago, and the gun has fired about 25-50 shots since he got it. (It barely has a cylinder-stop ring so I figure the claimed amount of shots is fairly accurate. He threw in the second 50- round box of ammo he bought with it, all unfired, as a bonus) The only other mark is a 1/4" scratch from what looks like an uncovered holster snap on the right side of the "hump." I like Smiths, and looking at local prices for used ones this one seemed a decent deal.
Ser# is J933507. I was wondering if any of the Smith wizards could tell me the age of this one. Thanks in advance!

Disconnect here?, according to the S & W book it dates to 1982. 0 -
I get tickled when people ask AFTER they buy. 0 -
Agree with the 1982 date but there's not much wrong with that? The friend may have mis-remembered that it was used instead of new when he bought it. In the condition described I'd be happy to have the 30 year old version; might still be one of the pinned barrel guns although that stopped in 1982. $350 seems a very fair price in the condition described and with a box of bullets. 0 -
It was bought new several years ago, (Well now I see it's around 30 so I guess that's many years ago [:)]) he didn't remember exactly when he bought it. It was originally bought to be a back-up gun (He was FBI) but he said it became a safe queen after a box of rounds instead. (He said he has the box somewhere, and if he locates it he'll send it my way as well.)
I knew it was older (pre-lock, I don't see a dash on the crane just "Mod.49", etc) and I know the M-49 started being made starting about 1959-1960, but I'm not a Smith expert on manufacture dates, etc. This shows almost no use, so I was just wondering when it was made. (I also checked the barrel, it's not a pinned one.)
Thanks all for the manufacture date, 1982. [8D]0 -
It could have set on the shelf for a lot of years and still be new in the box. 0
