Colt SAA Grips
Last year I bought a 3rd gen Colt SAA - comes with the black checkered grips and I don't care for them. Ideally I'd like to switch them out for plain old dark walnut but finding a pair that fit has become a PITA. Hogues are wildly oversized. Is there anyone out there that makes wood grips that fit "out of the box" on a 3rd gen?

There are several pair on the auction side, but I didn't see any wooden ones that were made by Colt.

Even grips made by Colt have to be fitted. Colt Custom Shop does a great job fitting exotic wood grips with the medallion, but, unless your FFL is willing to ship USPS, the cost could be quite high.
There's probably some equipment or technique for fitting grips perfectly without risk to the gun, but I don't know it.

Nmyers is right. No two Colt straps come out exactly the same, so Colt finishes the straps and the grips in assembly, before blueing the straps. The result is a perfect fit.
Some custom grip makers do the same, and then reblue the straps. Others work the grips only, which is more time-consuming but which preserves the originality of the gun, and also enables the reinstallation of the original grips which still also have a perfect fit. I use the latter method. If you buy 'store-bought', they are also usually available oversized on all dimensions. I believe Dixie Gun Works still sells oversized blanks (but you can get a better quality of wood from a custom blank supplier). Start big, and no extreme skills are required to work them down, just patience.0 -
