Savage Model 25 bolt action

Has anyone had any problems with the Savage Model 25 bolt action rifle in 204 Ruger
I purchased 1 about a year ago and it is one nice shooting rifle but to I was using 32 gr Hornady factory ammo and it was shooting nice as always but on the 11th shot the bolt handle fell off in my hand. Upon checking the bolt assembly the lug that the handle screws into was broken right off.

  IMHO, Looks like the weld failed. Contact Savage, with all the liability problems that the firearms industry deals with, they will probably be all to happy to give you a replacement rifle.

  I'm sure Savage will take care of it. A broken bolt handle is pretty high on the list of "it's our fault".
  
  Whether they choose to replace the rifle entirely or provide a new bolt (which would require your rifle to be sent to them) I would ask that whatever charges are incurred be paid by Savage. Shipping to & from should definitely be covered. I agree the safest route is a new rifle and depending on which state you live in that can mean a fair amount of cost - FFL fee, paperwork, state fees on your "new" rifle. I returned a Volquartsen Evolution for replacement and being in CA the FFL transfer (from out of state) and state paperwork cost me about $100.00. Most states aren't that bad, but I'd ask Savage to cover those costs too.
  
  I'd be interested to know if they offer to replace the rifle, replace the bolt or just repair the bolt - hopefully they don't mail out a certificate for a tube of JB Weld, right?[:(!]

  Actually from the picture you provided, that looks like a cold brazed joint. Most of the time, these are pre assembled in a fixture and brazed/silver soldered. If this was done with a torch, it looks like there was not enough heat on one of the parent parts for the filler to adhear to it.
  
  Send it back to Savage, after you talk to them. They might say just to send the bolt.

  Thanks for all the input on my issue. I'll have to see what becomes of it. I sure would hate to give the rifle up It is a super shooter.

  Hello all,
  
  Just wanted to share that I did in fact return the rifle to savage and I just got it back today 8-3-12. There was no charge for the parts, labor or mailing. The old bolt was replaced with a new and improved bolt which has a removable locking lug with larger sako type extractor. A larger umbrella shaped bolt shroud and a separate sleeve where the bolt handle attached which appears to be hardened and more solid in fit that is threaded into the bolt body. There is no square cut out where it attaches like in the photo submitted which I suspect caused the breakage. Over all Savage made good on the repair service and the turn around time was fast. Thanks a bunch SAVAGE ARMS.
