Knife Guys, I'm Stumped
I have a great cutting knife I've used for a long time and am interested in learning a little about it.
It's a J. A. HENCKELS TWIN WORKS, SOLINGEN GERMANY
Below that it has:
GRAND PRIZE, PARIS 1900, ST. LOUIS 1904
Below that:
101-9
It's 9" carbon steel, a slicer or chef, with a wooden handle. It's my favorite kitchen knife and holds an edge like nobodys' business.
I'm thinking it's prewar and I've looked all over the web and can't find another like it or any that have the grand prize marking.
Anyone know what all the markings mean and maybe when it was made, or a site that would have that info?
Thanks.
ADDENDUM: There are no cross rivets in the handle, but it does have one tiny nail(?) at the forward top of the handle.

Man, thanks a bunch! None are exactly like mine, but I know it's over a hundred years old now. It still cuts up a fryer in nothing flat! [:D]0 -
There is a big knife forum on the net. Probably you could find it easily by GOOGLEing. They have a number of different boards populated with all different flavors of knife people. Sign up for it and and post on the correct board preferably with photos, very likely you'll find somebody who will give you chapter and verse on your knife. 0 -
Thanks Rufe. I really just wanted to find out actually how old it was. It really is my favorite kitchen knife. 0 -
I don't mean to hijack your post, but you said it best. It's around 100 years old, and is your favorate...
I have several kitchen utensils that are my favorate, and they belonged to my grand fathers. One was brn in 1900, and one in 1912.
I have several kitchen knives, and best of all CAST IRON frying pans. The type of pans that are high quality machined, and being seasoned like they are, are more non-stick, than most coated pans. Whoa to the one who uses soap to clean them...
Glad to hear about your knife...it would be great to see a picture of it.

The dates and locations of those grand prize awards would indicate they were from the Worlds Fair ! Solingen steel has no equal as far as holding an edge goes . We used to have a local knife maker that made all his blades from circle saw blades , made in Solingen , Germany and they were incredible ! Your knife is probably ready for another century of service . Keep that wooden handle oiled and out of the dishwasher ! 0
