Leave it as is and put a 18.5 in barrel on it. That's about as practical as it gets.

You can change the look but you aren't going to change function and that's the part that matters.

I have a 870 Express cut to 20 inch with screw in chokes, a pistol grip and a mag extencion. The sling carries 10 rounds. The best attachment was a mid bead I put in the rib, very handy for slugs.

"sort of defense" gun?? For home defense, leave the sling in the closet. You don't want to be going through the doorway, down the hall, most likely in the dark, and catch the dam sling on a door knob,,[;)][;)] just my .02

It is a shotgun, shooting a home invader with a shotgun, even a single shot H&R 12 ga is going to keep you and yours safe. The things you are buying are because you want a cool factor. The cool factor is great fun, enjoy!

Personally, I like a sling. . .handy for when you do NOT want to be pointing it, or need both hands free. If you keep the loose looping to a minimum, it shouldn't snag.

    Other things?

Well, you said its a youth gun. Make sure the stock fits you well, that would actually be more important than EVERYTHING else.

A side-saddle of some sort to hold more ammo (or a different type) wouldn't be too "crazy", but bluntly if you need more than 7 shots, having another few available probably won't make the difference.

I can think of more things to do, but if you're after "simplicity and function" really, less is more.

You may. . .or may not see benefit to altering the bead with the intent of better use in dim light. If you want to shoot slugs with it, ghost ring ("peep") type sights may help, and some people do like that sort of setup on a defensive gun.
