Defensive shotgun

What is current thought on defensive shotgun choking? My old Benelli M1Super 90's were IC and worked well with buckshot and BRI type slugs. I now have an 1100 with a slug barrel that mikes .715 ID. It gives reasonable accuracy with BRI's at 50 yards and patterns well with 00 and #4 buck. Would I gain any accuracy by having the barrel fitted for a Rem-choke rifled tube? Would there be a negative trade off for using buckshot through the rifled choke?

  At in the room distance I don't think you will see much effect on buck from rifleing but at 50 yds you will be very unhappy unless your goal is total shot dispersion. I liked the BRI's. My current is the Lyman sabot slug, works very well for me to a 100 yds or so.

  My experience with full choked barrels and 00 buck at 25 yds has been negative. If your 1100 patterns 00 at 50 so that there is more the 1 hole in the target, consider yourself fortunate. I would keep the barrel like it is, it seems OK to me.
  
  
  IMHO, your way better off with it loaded with 00 buck during a high stress situation. Screw up with a slug and you might wind up ventilating some guy lying in bed, two blocks away.

  I say If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
  
  If your patterning is satisfactory at 50 yards, and your groups are fine with slugs, you're done.
  
  How accurate do you really "need" to be with slugs anyway? I'd say if you "need" to shoot smaller than a few inch group at 50 yards, maybe you ought to look at something different than a shotgun.
  
  To answer the specific question, even if adding a rifled choke improved your grouping with slugs (and the only way to know if that's true is to try it), it would also probably DEGRADE your shot pattern.
  
  Is that a worthwhile tradeoff? it wouldn't be to me. In my mind, conceptually a "defensive" shotgun is for shot first, and at relatively close ranges, then for slugs second.
