Check the auction side. I believe the old Iver Johnson Model X is a fairly rare rifle. Not real rare, but rare enough to generate some moderate collector interest. I watched a few auctions with interest to bid and I recall seeing some in decent condition going for around $200.'ish. A little more than I'd pay. But apparently worth it to someone.

excellent original shape = $200 minimum, probably closer to $250 to someone who is looking for one.

For what ever its worth, the 2011 Standard Catalog of Firearms give the following values: Exc..$175, V.G..$110 and Good..$90. The 30th Edition of The Blue Book of Gun Values list a X bolt action early model and a X bolt action late model. Says the late model is simular to the early with a larger, heavier stock. The prices are the same for both models. 100% $250, 98% $220, 95% $190, 90% $155. That maybe be more info than you wanted but what the heck. lol.

Thanks so much to all, great answers, I was considering grooving it for a 3/8 scope mount and didn't want to ruin its value if it was worth 300 or more

I wouldn't do it. You WILL destroy any current and future collector value. You can a factory grooved rifle pretty cheaply.
