870 rifled slug barrel compatability ??'s

My dad has a late 1970's production Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 ga. He recently expressed some interest in obtaining a rifled slug barrel for it to do a little hunting on his property.

Will current production slug barrels fit this model, being that is 30+ years old? Are they "interchangable"? Is there a specific serial number range?

Nothing I have read in the ad's or teh websites seem to show any specific years/serial #'s as being an issue.....but i would hate to buy him the wrong thing and then get stuck.

Any advice would be appreciated.

  I have a 1960 Rem. 870 that was a plain jane modifed Wingmaster and purchased a Remington rifled slug barrel with the iron sights. The combo shoots lights out at 100 yards.Then because of aging eyes purchased a Remington Cantilever fully rifled barrel which also wor
  ks even better. Point; if you unsure contact Remington via e-mail on which barrels are compatable,I would recommend Remington factory made barrels to insure proper fit and preformance.

  You neer an REMINGTON 12ga. Cantileaver Rifled slug Barrel with a 2.5 x 5 SHOTGUN SCOPE.
  DO NOT PUT AN RIFLE SCOPE ON IT AS THEY WILL NOT STAND UP TO TYHE RECOIL OF A 12ga. SLUG.
  Mine will do MOA.at 100 yds. but I will not shoot 200 yds. with it.

  I would personally stay away from the "rifled barrels. Most IC choked, smooth bore slug guns will do well enough to keep a good sightd gun well in the vitals of a deer at 100 to 125 yards. The rifled bores, MUST use sabot slugs, which are very expensive, and IMHO, don't offer that much more, except for the exceptional gun enthusiast/marksman...That does not include the every now and then hunter. If you use regular rifles slugs in a rifled barrel, it will shoot great for about 5 shots, then seriously fall off, as the rifling fills up with lead shavings. They are a lot of work to get clean again.
  
  You may put any good scope, Nikon Buckmaster, Burris FullField II, Leupold VX-1, and above on a pump slug gun. It is the bi directional recoil of the semi-auto's that destroy scopes...much like a big spring piston air rifle. I suggest like a 2-7 power for most slug guns of this type.
