ammo recomendations for a 6.5x284 norma
i have just ordered a T/C venture in a 6.5x284 norma. i have not had any dealings with this caliber nor do i know anybody that has, hence this posting. i dont know the rate of twist but i think it's 1-8,or atleast thats what is on the T/C site listed for encore barrels...they dont have the venture posted in that caliber. so anyway back to the question. what bullet weight should i go with? i am not shooting long distance, this will be a hunting rifle and its max yardage shot will be around 250 yds. i like bigger bullets and found norma 156gr oryx and these interest me alot, just hate to buy bulk ammo if the gun wont handle this bigger bullet. does anybody know if a 1-8 twist will handle th heavier bullet? or will i have to run with something in the 130's or 140's?

The 6.5x284 was a wildcat based on the .284 Winchester case, just necked down to take the 6.5mm (.264") bullets. The 1:8" twist is a common in order to make sure that the longer for caliber bullets remain stable.
In your situation, think .30-06 necked down to 6.5mm as far as a comparison is concerned since both cartridges have very similar case capacities and performance.
Bullets are plentiful and diverse for reloading and there are several manufacturers of commercial ammunition. Nosler, Cor-Bon, HSM all have a line of 6.5x284 ammunition for hunting some target shooting. Norma and Lapua make a couple of flavors of target ammunition.
Remember that it's the length of the bullet and the velocity which determines the twist rate necessary to keep the bullet stable. Your 1:8" twist will handle every length (weight) of bullet made today for most uses. I have some very unusual designs which require exceptionally fast twists but the average shooter will never encounter these.
The 156 gr. Oryx will do just fine in your 1:8" twist.
