1911 Clips

I just have a quick question. I saw a good price on a Colt 1911, .45 ACP clip. I have a Kimber. I did not buy it becuase I was not sure it would fit my gun. By manufacturer are most 1911 clips interchangeable? I even saw some brands I thought to be "knowckoffs" or generic clips that were much cheaper than either the Colt or Kimber clips.

    I have seen a lot of fake Magazine with the Colt name on them. If you have the skills and tools, you can make almost any mag work well.

    I only use Chip McCormick or Wilson mags....period. Mags are the MOST important part of a semi, especially 1911s, don't waste your money with cheap crap and don't try to make cheap crap work.

    If it is a genuine Colt magazine, it should work OK. Like said above there are many magazines out there with COLT stamped on the floor plate that are knock offs and most are junk.

    A 1911 uses a magazine, the M1 Garand uses a clip. [:)] As mentioned the Chip McCormick mags are some of the best. Save your headaches and buy a few of them.

    The maker of your 1911 is not important if it is a true 1911, all 1911 magazines should fit fine.

    As mentioned,Chip McCormick mags,I have never had a problem with Mec-Gar either.Wilsons are the best IMO but pricey,but they are what I use in my carry pistol.

    Colt mags are made by contractors; Colt hasn't made their own mags for > 50 years. We know who made some mags that are identified by a small letter on the base, but most we don't.

    Mec Gar makes OEM mags for several of the largest gun manufacturers in the world; all of their mags are top quality. I am not aware that they ever made mags for Colt.

    I use nothing but G.I. mags in my 1911's. One has to be careful when buying these, as they have been faked, right down to the contractor ID number and the sealed packaging, and the quality of the fakes can be extremely poor.

    The original-configuration magazines have non-parallel lips which allow the base of the cartridge to rise against the breech face as the cartridge moves forward. This reduces the feed angle of the cartridge as it enters the chamber. Many may disagree, but JMB actually knew some things about gun design [:)].

    With many major manufacturer's handguns these aren't really aftermarket items. They're in fact OEM magazines that aren't marked with the pistol manufacturer's name.

    I don't know who currently makes Colt's magazines for them, but Checkmate is the USGI 1911 and M9 magazine contractor.

    I've been buying and using surplus government magazines on my Colt and non-Colt 1911's without any problems so far. I don't think I've run into any counterfeit yet.

    The only complaint I have is that you can't replace the bases. On my Sig 1911, the magazine well extends just enough so that you really need a pad on the base for a fast load, but that's not a deal breaker.
