Is it safe to shoot .38 special in this firearm ?

  NO! It is chamberd and designed to shoot the 38 Long Colt.

  When the U.S. military adopted the .38 Long Colt chambered revolvers in the late 1880's, it was a low pressure Black Powder cartridge. Stressing these revolvers with modern high pressure .38 Specials is really pushing the envelope.
  
  Some of the makers of Cowboy Action Shooting ammo make low pressure .38 Long Colt ammo. I would do a GOOGLE search for "Cowboy Action Shooting Ammo", to see if you can find a supplier.

  Black Hills, Ultramax, Ten X and Black Dawge all make it. You will want to reload for it because its pricey and not always on the shelf. I have used Black Hills Cowboy ammo and it is really good stuff.
