Rebore or reline Winchester barrel?

I have a couple of projects I am finally getting around to and have a question 73 barrels. Let's say I have a 44-40 barrel in not so good condition. Is it better to put in a liner or to have a 38-40 barrel rebored to 44-40?

    Maybe you should rebore it to 45 colt ?

    Before you go to that trouble, I'd suggest slugging the bore and either load some ammo, or have it custom loaded, with cast bullets matching the bore size. I've seen some pretty ratty looking bores shoot well with cast lead bullets sized properly. Those older barrels, with slow moving large diameter lead bullets, are inherently pretty accurate. Just my $.02

    Rebore the 38-40 to 44-40 in Winchester period style rifling and remark the barrel properly.
    If you reline the bad 44-40,rifling wont be authentic style but marking will.

    I would reline. If done properly it will be nearly invisible and the markings stay correct. Re marking the barrel would hurt the collectability more than relineing in my opinion. That is just my opinion, worth what it cost you.

    Agree with yooper and slumlord.
    It MIGHT shoot as is. (Mine wouldn't)
    A reline will preserve markings.
    My older Redman reline shows but he says they do not now.

    And if you are interested in resale value more than accuracy, you should leave it alone.

    Weither or not the reline shows depends on the installer rather than the liner. John Taylor is good. He is usualy on the {Elsewhere} website.
