    How good of a rifle is the Savage 111? I am lokking at 1 in a left hand .243 for my daughter.

    Is it used or new? It seems to me that I believe the 111 is the long action, and the 11 is the short action. If it is used it has possibly been rebarreled.

    They are great rifles, in general for the price range they fall within, for your intended purposes.

    Absolutely great rifles for the money. I was skeptical about them until I bought the first one, a model 110 synthetic in 243 (made prior to savage going to their 11 series). I now have five savage rifles and they are all excellent shooters, right out of the box. I am totally confident in them now and will be opening deer season this year with a model 11 in 300 rsaum.

    They are a very good rifle for the price you can get them for. The wife has one in 30-06.

    I recently bought an older Savage 112 in 25.06 - walnut stock, single shot and no AccuTrgger. What a great deal (under $300.00) and accurate as heck. I always have my eye open for another good deal, wouldn't hesitate to get another Savage.

    I would not be at all concerned about the stock length. Savage stocks are a dime a dozen(figuratively speaking) so just get a beater and cut it to fit or cut the original and find a full sized replacement later. The 111 long action will add a couple of ounces over the 11 short action but there's not much diff in overall performance.

    The Savage rifle series was all 110 at one point from about the seventies onwards. My wife has a series 110 PE in .243. They maintained the different variations of 110 up until the nineties sometime. At that point, they started branching their numbers out to three digit variations. Packages were 111's, target/varmint rifles were 112's, and stainless versions were 116's. The reason I say this is because, their first 'heavy barreled rifles were all 110's. I've owned a 110 Tactical in .308. Then came the two digit numbers to signify long or short action. I want to say that was about 1995-1997. Anyhow, the Law Enforcement series stayed under 10/110 but they were the basic rifle. The 112 then 12/112 were offshoots of this series. Now they code it all with letter suffixes which change about every year.

    The long and short of it is: when Ron Coburn took over as CEO of Savage, they've gone in the right direction ever since. I used to laugh at their 'resurgence' until I really 'had to have' a tacticool rifle. So, I bought a 12FV on closeout for $330 out the door. The rifle was a same hole shooter. So, in my looking back I've seen what Savage has done and that has been to put them back on the map with some quality shooting rifles.
