Kimber 1911

just wandering,can anybody tell me annything about kimber 1911's,are they as good as colt,springfield,what's your opinion.

    Just purchased a Kimber Eclipse custom II. Im very impressed with the way it shoots and handles. Thanks for the advice guys. [:D]

    I find that factory Colt and Wilson Combat magazines run the best in a Kimber. You may also find I.S.M.I. recoil springs will save you on the maintenance costs and keep you shooting longer. My 16Lb I.S.M.I. recoil spring has cycled at least 5000 rounds during firing and countless chamber checking cycles and it still refuses to quit. Enjoy.

    16 pounds? Kinda light, ain't it? I think I'm running 26 pounders on my 1911s.

    Also what's I.S.M.I.?

    16 pounds is light if using factory hardball loads. I use an 18 pound Wolff spring for factory equivalent loads.

    anyone know about the 500 round break in period for new Kimbers? Manual says to fire 230 grn hardball for the first 500.

    Kimbers are strange 1911s. A few years ago Denver Police Dept dropped Kimbers from their authorized list because Kimber only has a few types of ammo that they say will function reliably in their guns. And they do not recommend any +P ammo in their guns. Here is the latest list I could find, with a quote from Kimber Law Enforcement Sales:

    "Requirements for an agency sale:

    The Agency must have or be willing to send someone to take a Kimber 1911 armorers course. A Colt 1911 or Springfield armorer's course will also be acceptable.

    Abide by approved ammo list.

    If an agency deviates from this list Kimber will not guarantee the pistols will function."

    The following ammo is approved for Kimber 1911 pistols. +P ammo is not recommended.

    Training Ammo
    230 grn ball Winchester white box
    230 grn ball American Eagle
    230 grn ball Black Hills
    230 grn ball Remington UMC

    Duty Ammo
    230 grn HP Federal Hydra Shock
    230 grn HP Winchester SXT
    230 grn HP Winchester Ranger Series
    230 grn HP Black Hills
    230 grn HP Golden Sabre
    230 grn HP Speer Gold Dot

    Personally, I will not own any gun that will only function with certain ammo.

    What type of ammunition do you recommend for your handguns?

    We recommend using quality American-made ammunition. Choose from trusted names like Federal, Winchester or Remington because ammunition by these makers has proven to be of consistent high quality. Our function testing is done with Federal 230 grain FMJ.

    +P ammo manufactured to SAAMI specs is fine to use as a defensive round or for occasional range use only. Our pistols are rated to handle +P ammo. However, we do not recommend a steady diet of them, as they are rough on the pistol and will accelerate the wear on the gun and may shorten the life of the recoil spring.

    The use of reloaded or remanufactured ammunition may be dangerous, and any issues related to its usage are not covered by warranty.
