Shotgun slugs
I would like to hear opinions of shotgun slug comparisons.20 Ga. versus 12 Ga. for accuracy and their ability to knock a deer down.Primarily the Sabot Slugs.And your opinion as to what brand of slugs you like.Any bad experience with with any type of slug you have used on deer.

Do you have to use sabots while shooting out of a rifled barrel? If not, what are some good(cheap) slugs that wont fill in my rifeling after 1 shot.

If it is a smooth bore barrel, use rifled slugs. Use them with Cylinder or Improved Cylinder chokes. I have seen better accuracy with Improved Cylinder. 0 -

A couple of decades back, I was invited on an Illinois deer hunt. I used an 870 with a slug barrel w/screw in rifled choke tube. It wasn't all that great but the scope I also mounted made aiming more precise vs the top of a vent rib so it was more accurate. Bottom line, with plain old rifled slugs it was deer killing accurate @ 100 yards but not much more. I think the cylinder bore vent rib barrel with a scope would have been more accurate than the rifled choke barrel ended up being. Can't say for sure since I didn't own both barrels concurrently.
I'd put more effort into improving aiming equipment than spending for a rifled choke tube.0 -
I shoot the cast Lyman 540 gr sabot in my 20" 12 ga 870 Express with my choke tube marked Skeet#2 with really good results for a smoothbore hand held. The old BRI sabot shot well for me too. Haven't tried the new all copper wonder stuff.
Whatever you plan to use, test some at ranges you expect to shoot.0
