Colt SM Ace question
I have an Ace and a Colt conversion and was wondering if there is any possibility of making a non-permanent change in order to be able to shoot 22 short?
I have an understanding of the "workings" and think that a spring tuned for it should work, but before altering one I thought I'd get some opinions.
If it were a feasible thing I guess a magazine might have to be altered to feed it properly.
Another question would be whether it would cause too much fouling.

I wouldn't even attempt it, the potential aggravation factor would be way to high.
In the past there have been a number of .22 pistols either made specifically for .22 short or having factory made .22 short conversion units.
The High Standard Flight Kings and Olympics, as well as the S & W Model 41, come to mind.0 -
I did wonder if it was going to be one of those things that "would work some of the time" but not work enough times to make it a pain.
The only reason I consider it is my having an abundance of 22 short, and an indoor gallery to shoot it in. If the noise from the cussin balanced out the difference in the report then maybe it is an ill conceived project.0 -
I'd pass. I have an SM that functions perfectly with lr ammunition. Trying to get it to feed with shorts would probably never work, and the magazine would be as big as a hurdle as the load/ejection. I would look for a Walther OSP, Smith 41 to handle the ammunition. Nothing wrong in "having" to buy another pistol. 0 -
If I had an Ace (I do) and a lot of Shorts (I don't) I would insert some of those shorts in Ace and pull the trigger.
I doubt it would work, but you can know for sure with little effort.
If they would even feed out of the magazine, it would be worth some spring engineering.0 -
There used to be many High quality Pistols made that shot 22 Short . As these pistols were used in international Rapid fire . These pistol are no longer used so many hit the used pistol market. Try places like Larry's guns and Champions Choice along with Champions Shooters Supply Also look for High Standard 22 short conversion kits they fit the Long rifle frame but have an aluminum slide You can even keep the long rifle barrel if you clean after use. Well, before I put too much thought into it and asked, I did try some. What I had wasn't a total failure to communicate just a lack of full comprehension.
In a less dumb way of saying it, I could feed the 1st round either by pulling the slide and letting it fly or by letting the slide go with the slide release. The problem with feeding is when you load more than 1 or 2 rounds into the magazine the tendency is for the upper round to push the round beneath it forward and it nosing down into the mag. If the pistol could be made to function otherwise I thought that a solution to the magazine problem could be taken care of in a similar manner to the way the Mossberg 141 did it with a screw fitted to go from the base of the mag straight up in front of the noses of the bullets.
When I would fire it the slide would at best come back and extract the spent casing fully but just drop it there, or it would just partially extract and rechamber the spent cartridge.
At the short distances that I've test fired the shorts, no more than 25 feet there has been very acceptable accuracy, usually around 1/2 inch.
I know I have some old springs around that I could trim back but I wanted to hear some opinions on this and especially if there were any warnings.
ps. The suggestion to buy another 22 pistol isn't lost on me. If these 22 shorts are meant to inspire me to do that I will. Even talking about that makes me start to do searches for things like the High Standards and Mod 41's.0 -
I will have a 22 short, Hi Standard Olympic "shooter grade" coming up in an estate sale mid October. Also, a 22 short conversion for a Citation(?) & will put them on the auction side if your interested. 0
