S&W Top Break Revolver - Year ???
I have a S&W top break, Double Action revolver in Cal 38 S&W (.365 bore)with a 5" barrel & Ser # of 127XXX. Latest patent date is Jan 5, 82. Can anyone tell me if this is a Mod 2 and aprox what year it was made. A previous owner removed all the finish & it is missing at least 1 part. I it isn't worth much, but I am curious as to what I have. Will most likely clean it up and see if I can make sufficient repairs so that it functions. She is broken down and in the clean up process (getting all the crud removed from the mechanical mechanisms mow. Looking at Gun Parts i need a cylinder stop. Mine is definitely broken and missing the piece that engages the cylinder. Old Style or New? Beats me. Are their after market parts available for these?

Assuming it has an exposed hammer, it is a .38 Double Action Third Model as made 1884-1895, probably early in that period.
The Number 2 is a single action.
Is the broken part the type of cylinder stop that is long and flexible? If so, that is a weak point of the design and the spares were used up long ago. A friend has one of the type in very nice shape... except for the cylinder stop.

It has the exposed hammer so it is the 3rd Model. Thanks for the historical info and for providing a source on how to make the missing part. Even if I never get it to function, I still own a piece of American History! 0
