Question about rifled chokes in a shotgun

Does anyone have any experience with rifled choke tube patterns? I was reading about the Taurus Judge handgun and they said that the pattern opened up quickly because of the rifled barrel. Would a rifled choke tube in a 20 inch shotgun barrel open the pattern up quicker? Thanks Steve G.

    Yup, it would open up quickly. And, after a bit of distance, it will create a pattern with a hole in the middle, like a donut.

    I've also read about experiments using cube shaped shot to quickly open a pattern, which works, but the pattern falls apart and gets unpredictably patchy further out.

    IIRC cubed shot was marketed under thicket loads. Several thin card wads with shot layered between them sorta makes spreader loads.

    My best result was to let the bird get farther away before blasting.

    I was thinking home defense. The longest possible visual straight shot in my home would be about 30 feet. If a rifled choke tube would act like a spreader that might be good.

    Actually, that might be great, especially with like #4 shot(I like #4 for this purpose, as it is heavy enough to penetrate an individual, but when spread out over a 2 foot pattern, will not totally annilate dry wall, or over penetrate a wall). It should work to spread out any shot, actually, and some better than other's. I would say an on paper test will tell you the whole story.

    It won't make the shot spread THAT much. I think the soft plastic of the shotcup will shave and load up the little rifling grooves pretty quick.

    On the brite side of things, if that does happen, it will be much easier to clean, by being able to remove the choke tube.
