    According to Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson the revolver you have is an N frame that would have been made in the 1955-1956 time frame. The longest barrel shown as available was 6 1/2". I can't help with the value.

    .44 Hand Ejector 4th Model Target aka Model of 1950 .44 Target. In 1956 the upper side plate screw was deleted at @ an S-175000. @ 5000 made. Price range 200-1700 USD.

    Herschel, nailed it. According to the S & W book, the Model of 1950, .44 Target, (Pre Model 24). Weren't made with 8" barrels.


    My guess is either it was rebarreled, or the person who measured the barrel length, measured it back to the face of the breech. You measure auto pistols that way, not revolvers.

    As always, you have been given excellent information. The Model of 1950 should have a 6 1/2" barrel and probably has target hammer and trigger. Pictures are the only way to determine the correct value.
    I have one, love it and wouldn't trade it for Joe's 696.
    They where built when pride in production was very high, you couldn't by a better revolver in 1956.

    Sir,

    The auction referenced will probably not bring this gun's potentially highest bid;

    A possibly high dollar collector grade gun should have multiple high quality photos. The photos in the auction are limited & say more about what is not shown than they do about what is visible. Also if truly a collector worthy gun, why not include a factory letter?

    The pre 24 target model should have target stocks (probably 'cokes')& only way to validate the stocks on this gun is with a factory letter.

    As listed, I would expect a max bid for a "shooter", IOW $800 ~ $900.

    If stocks are numbered to the gun, that's what came on it. It looks like it might be a target hammer, but standard trigger.

    I quote SCSW-3rd ".400 target hammer, .265 serrated trigger". Looks like is fine but for the money bid, I would ask for a confermation.

    As stated in my previous post, the pre-24 was produced with target stocks, the ones on the gun pictured are diamond magna's. "Numbered to the gun" is little comfort when the auction states "as is, no return".

    "Cokes" stocks that were original for the period are selling for $500+ without the gun. This would not surprise me to be a case of switch & harvest the wood. I do not accuse the seller of wrong doing, but when my money is on the line, I prefer to invest rather than gamble!
