Another Remington 740 question
I know the forum people here are not overly impressed with the 740. I bought one today that looks in great condition. My question: Would it make sense to load cartridges for it to the same level as my Garands rather than load to sporting ammo specs?

Dead is dead, the deer won't notice the 120 FPS difference in impact velocity. If the load shoots good in both guns, all the better.

From experience with loading the 740/742/7400 series, you will need a SMALL BASE die for sizing, and a factory/taper crimp die for seating/crimping, to get reliable loads out of it. It should like ball powder's like 748, and 760, too.

Of the two semi-autos in our family, one is a 1956 mfg Rem 740 30-06, the other is a 1962 Win 100 308. I'm partial to the Win but my dad prefers the Rem. I reload for it and perform the cleaning/ maintenance. While the 740 won't set any records for accuracy, my experience has been that given decent care, it will operate reliably. I load 150 gr bullets with IMR 4320, with 180 gr I use Rl 19. The loads are off maximum by about 3 grains, which seems to be enough that I don't need to use small base dies, but I do full length size. The main thing seems to have the pressure at the guns sweet spot when the bullet passes the gas port and to keep the gas system/extractor clean. 0 -

Took the 740 to the range this AM. Tried some CMP Greek ammo in it (HXP78) and it seems to want to shoot. I had decided that if I could get three shots on a paper plate, I'd be satisfied. Four shot group measured 1.69". Now, the down side. Every case stayed in the chamber with part of the rim ripped off. I know those rifles are noted for needing a clean smooth chamber to function right. Are there any tricks to polish that chamber without taking it apart? 0 -
First thing I'd check is to examine the ripped portion of each case & compare it to the extractor. It may be that the extractor is not completely snapping down on the rim or the extractor may have developed a bevel so that when it starts back, instead of pulling the case along with it, it pops over the rim. Before I started removing metal from the chamber I'd make sure the extractor is doing it's job. If so, then I'd try a few different brands of ammo- since the ones fired may have a port pressure not suited to the rifle. 0 -
common problem with the 740/742/etc. what i suggest is remove the barrel. get a bore brush for .410, wrap with 0000 steel wool soaked with kroil place on cleaning rod chucked up in electric drill. place in chamber and burnish the chamber removing the rust and residue from powder gases. this works 96% of the time. 0
