K-98 question
I just picked up a (what I thought) real nice mostly matching K98 this afternoon. Really nice bore. byf 43 on the receiver (Mauser, I know), but the barrel is not S/N'd to the receiver and there are no waffen stamps that I can find. There are no import marks and the S/N is W477x. Need your help experts!

Ok, here is some more for you all. I pulled it all apart and found the following............
The bolt W477x matches the receiver S/N on the top. underneath is stamped 464 (which matches the barrel S/N that I didn't see until I pulled the stock off).
The laminated stock is marked 477x at the left rear about 2" above the cupped butt plate (unmarked). Under the barrel (on the stock) is marked 6360 and the upper handguard is marked 4991. The front barrel band is the earlier style (with the cut outs, not the solid type) marked 2446 (lined out) I did find a few waffen marks here and there, but not like ones posted on the auction site.
The bottom line is, Did I pick up a arsenal rebuild or a "Franken-Mauser" I have the option of returning it if is the latter.0 -
From the mismatched barrel band and missing waffen amt inspection markings. It sounds like one of the Russian reworks. I don't see the krauts doing anything like that, if it was one of their arsenal rebuilds. 0 -
All the '43 K98k's by Mauser Oberndorf had a letter suffix, none having a letter prefix like you indicate. A few were made for the '41 Portuguese Contract, but those have the Portuguese crest on the receiver.
The barrel should have a number of markings such as year made, serno, and three Waffenamts.
Without photographs there is little that can be determined.0 -

If the stock has the serial stamped on the side of the butt, it's a Russian capture. Germans only stamped the barrel channel and/or the bottom edge of the butt. Is there an "X" stamped anywhere on the receiver ring?
With a mismatch barrel, and no indications of being a RC, it's most probably a Czech rework. Sometimes they have czech proofs, and sometimes they don't. Post some pics.0 -
To all, Thanks for the education on this topic. Here is the scenario.... I'm down at the local shop and look this rifle over. As I mentioned, most of the numbers match. I buy it and bring it home to find that it is a parts gun or Russian capture. I bring it back to the shop and they were just as buffalo'd as me. Do the internet search and find that this meets all of the criteria. Bad education for me and the shop. I am in the process of either getting a little $$ back or a full refund. Sill a nice rifle though...........

I cannot find an "X" stamped into the receiver, but the S/N has a "W" prefix, which I was told was odd.0 -
Good close up pics of all the stampings, is the only way to get an accurate ID. 0
