Rem 700 - Base & Rings?

I have a new Rem 700 SPS Tactical in 308. Needs quality glass but it will have to do with one of my current inexpensive scopes until the "Toy Fund" is re-plenished. That said, I would like to invest in a "Doesn't Break the Bank" set of rings and base. Recomendations? Need to accommodate at least a 40mm lens scope.

  I have the Leupold QRW - Quick Release Weaver - rings on a couple of rifles and like them.

  I've always liked the one-piece bases - Leupold or Redfield. Rings would be the front pivot type, with the 40mm scope mediums should work fine. If you go to a 54mm then you will need to go to high rings. This was the combo we used on all our marksman setups during my SWAT days. The scope choice was left to the man assigned to the rifle. Most used Leupold 3.5 - 10X, but one preferred the Bushnell 10X Tactical. Lots of newer stuff out there now that would, probably, change some of the choices.

  I use Buehler rings and bases on all my guns when I can find them. In my opinion they are the best ever designed. Weatherby used them exclusivey on all their guns

  I remounted a scope on a 700 short action recently and used the DNZ one piece base & rings. Very little to work loose and is very solid- not as pretty as a Conetrol or Buehler though.

  Thanks for the info guys. I at least have several options to look at now. Next is seeing what the Toy Fund can currently support.

  It all depends on what you want this to do, as to how much you are going to need to replentish your "toy fund". I suggest going to the Eurooptic.com site, and looking for your base, rings, and glass there. I would strongly suggest a Vortex Viper PST scope, for the glass, being the best budget price, big feature, bang for the buck($$). Eurooptic has a base mount/ring sustem with their own name brand on it too, that is around $130.00, that percieves to have a lot of features for the price.
  
  Before you get too excited about glass, and mounting hardware, you migt want to check into a good stock, depending on what you are looking to do with this iron, too.

  For your thinking process:
  
  Don't put the cart before the horse. You need to decide on the scope you want to buy then match the rings and base to it.
  
  I agree with the Vortex suggestion since we use lots of these when folks want great optics for reasonable pricing.
  
  There is no reason to try to locate obsolete rings and bases for your rifle when there is a plethora of terrific components to choose from currently. A large number of the 'tactical' or Picatinny-style components can be found at very decent pricing. The 'tactical' type parts are not necessary though if that's not the look you're interested in presenting. Any quality rings and bases will work.
  
  Then to keep things on that same plane of reasonable, you can look at the Burris Zee rings used on Weaver or Picatinny bases (rails). These rings have nylon inserts in them to prevent the infamous 'ring marks' that accompany so many scopes attached by amateurs with no experience.
  
  I also suggest replacing that Hogue stock on the rifle first. It is not a platform which is conducive to accuracy and stability. There is too much play in the forearm. Bad design, poor execution, cheap stock.
