Husky Tradewinds H-5000 update
Rifle arrived this morning. Upon closer examination it's clear that this rifle is a re-chambered 30-06. The bolt face has been opened up to accept the larger base. Appears to be a nice job so I'm hoping it's a quality re-chambering. In stead of a unique rifle it's just a modified rifle [:(]

I was attracted to the figure in this stock. Obviously it needs restoring but that's what I enjoy most anyway. The bluing has some rub marks on it and I'm pretty sure this light little rifle in this caliber will also need a better recoil pad.
I've always been attracted to the schnabel style stocks, in fact one of my favorite rifles is a Winchester XTR featherweight in 7x57. Love the looks and feel of it and the bonus is it shoots well too.

For me, it's a relief when I get something that has been modified, because I don't don't hear "why did you change it" from some purist- but I can change what I want in order for it to work better for me. I've always liked the appearance of the schnabel forend, especially those on Husqvarnas and Anschutz. Check the rifle over very carefully and you may find an identification marker made by the smith that did the rechambering. 0 -
I gotta agree with you Ray B. 300 Win mag Husky, matte black finish, re-finished stock, kick-eze or decelerator recoil pad and proper sling swivels will likely annoy some folks [;)] but like you say, I can always say it was already modified when I got it.
Not sure what optics yet, likely 3-9 variable leupold with lightweight mounts. Should make a nice light elk rifle if it shoots well.
Pulled the wood off but was unable to find any other markings. Guess the gunsmith wasn't too proud of his work. When I went to put it back together I noticed a chip of wood missing from behind the tang [:(!]. Got my geezer glasses and got down on my knees and found not one but three wood chips! Appears someone was shooting this thing with the action screws loose. I will repair it and bed it and should alleviate this problem.
Not crazy about the non-adjustable iron sights but I intend to leave them on. Once I work up a favorite load I'll adjust them and have them for backup or close range work.
It has cheap weaver bases right now. I think the front base is the same as Win model 70 but not sure what to do about the rear base. Would they be the same as a K98 rear base?0 -
I wouldn't put another nickel in it, until you shoot it off a rest with quality factory ammo. A turd is always a turd, no matter what you do to it. Bad enough you got stuck with some guys bubba special. Lot of times in this kind of situation it best to cut your losses, instead of sinking way more money into something that you will never recover. 0
