Wow, the things you learn here. I'm not a gunsmith but have had numerous rifles built for me and worked a lot with them. I had always considered the barrel length to be "the length of the barrel", which of course comes up short when using "bolt face to tip of muzzle" method.
Then again, I wonder how many people didn't get the benefit of this law if their rifle would have measured 16" if the bolt face/muzzle method had been used?[}:)][?]0 -
Several years ago I read a post on the SASS website by a member who was traveling from his home in Tucson, AZ to a cowboy action shoot near Phoenix. Several miles from Tucson, he was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint. To make a long story short, the USBP officers found a Winchester 97 pump shotgun in his car, and the lead USBP agent (a woman) used a tape to measure the barrel from the front edge of the receiver to the muzzle. It measured about 17 3/4 inches, and at that point she stated that the gun was an illegal short-barreled shotgun, handcuffed the guy, placed him in the USBP wagon, and called the ATF. It was about 7AM on a Sunday morning, and it took the duty ATF agent about 4 hours to respond to the scene of the check point. During this time, the guy tried repeatedly to tell the USBP supervisor at the scene that the proper way to measure the barrel length was to drop a rod down the barrel, and measure the rod from the end to the point where it hit the muzzle. He was told to "shut up".
When the ATF agent got to the scene, he dropped a rod down the barrel, and determined that the barrel exceeded 18 inches, and the gun was legal. The guy was taken out of the BP wagon, un-cuffed, and told "Go."
No apology. No nothing. Just "Go."0
