26 mm scope tube
Any theories as to why this size tube was used on American made scopes such as the Stith/Kollmorgan/early Redfield and the Lyman Challenger and Wolverine? It seems it would have been more convenient to use 1". It couldn't have been that the extra .023" would have been that much brighter. Besides, the Lyman Alaskan was the dream scope in those days and it had a 7/8" tube.

It was a European standard. We originally used the 7/8" tube then graduated to the 1" tube which held steady for several years before we moved on to the 30mm, 34mm and then the 35mm tube. It's not a case of admitting more light but allowing for more adjustment in the elevation.
From the U.S. Optics website:
"30mm tubes are standard on all U.S. Optics scopes with a choice of either 34 or 35mm tubes for added elevation travel. If you are looking to improve the distances that you are capable of engaging, you may consider the upgraded larger tube diameter. Some people think that the larger tube diameter provides better light transmission, but this is not the case."

Instead of buying a new scope, I just put a thin piece of brass between the bridge and base, and use the two piece rings to straighten the alignment. But I still havew ended up with 7/8, 1, 26, & 30mm tubes- haven't gotten to 34 or 35 yet, but then I can't see that far. 0 -
Stoeger also sold Nickel and Kahles German scopes in 26MM.
Finding reasonably priced rings can be a problem.0 -
Or yu can take a pair of 1" rings, screw them as they would be on the scope and use a brake cylinder reamer/polish to remove a little over .01" from the inside of the rings for a custom fit. 0 -

After giving away a set of 26 mm rings to a buyer who only wanted the USMC-1 Kollmorgen scope they were attached to, I acquired two 26mm scopes and was real lucky to eventually find Weaver rings for them.
Besides Leupold who has them for their bridge mount,I believe there's a high end tactical supply house that has them for about $100.
Upsizing a pair of 1" rings and getting coaxial alignment may be easier said than done using hand tools.0 -
If you chose not to afford the proper 26mm rings you can always buy any number of 30mm rings and use a step down insert which is of little expense.
You should avoid hand tool for making rings larger but you can certainly set them up on a mill, indicate them in and bore them out to size with an adjustable boring head or write a quick program for circular interpolation. Either way works since we employ both frequently.

A little over .01"= .0115", removed radially from the inside of the ring results in opening the diameter to .023" the approximate diameter of 26mm.[:)]0 -
And while that may seem to a clever retort to the correction, the discussion was oriented around diameters, not radius or radii, as even your initial comment alluded. Bent semantics. [;)]
