mossberg s-100 sight spins freely
Mossberg 44US(a), S-100 rear sight. Here's the only parts diagram I've been able to find - http://www.box54.com/ex-s100.jpg
In theory, the sight should rotate about 90 degrees to allow use of scope, removing bolt, etc. but should stop at "out of the way" and at "proper angle for aiming".
Elevation barrel is installed upside down (by PO).
When rotating either the windage arm, the elevation barrel, or the elevation shaft all 3 move together. Again, in theory, to remove the barrel I simply keep elevating until the elevation shaft unscrews and it comes apart. In reality, no unscrewing going on - just free spinning.
Ideas please on
1) How to get the thing apart to see if installing the barrel properly will fix it?
2) If installing the barrel properly isn't the answer, what else should I look for? From the parts diagram I'm not missing anything, nothing appears bent, broken, out of place, etc. other than the upside down elevation barrel.

Have tried pulling up while turning the elev bbl. It might be stripped. Sometimes there are really tiny screws that hard to see or things like the windage screw/nut in a S&W rear sight. Have good light and fast food tray to catch the little detents or balls and springs. 0 -
I think you are missing the "dog spring" (S200) and, probably, the "dog spring screw" (S205). This attaches to the bottom of the sight bracket and has two claws that engage the grooves in the sight post. I would suggest you contact the Mossberg Collectors Association and see if they have these parts or can direct you to some one who has.
I have several Mossberg rifles including some that are equiped with the S100 sight. My first rifle (I still have it) is a 146B that has this sight. If you can find an old 1950's era Stoeger's catalog, they have very good parts diagrams in the back of Mossberg rifles including parts break-downs of your sight.

My 151M has about the same sight. I think you are missing the "dog spring" S200 and the two balls S202.
I don't see how anything could be upsidedown the way the sight is put together.0 -
The barrel is upside down... at least, the lettering on it is 
Pickle fork spring is present. Took it to a shoot today to ask some folks in the know, they suggest penetrating oil soak, sharpening the barbs on the pickle fork, and squeezing the tines together a little more.0
