6mm---rebarrel--No. 2
I'm considering buying a Rem 700, or a Browning in ,270, or 30-06, to rebarrel to a 6mm. Rem. Am I likely to feeding problems, or rail problems. I think I will go with the LA, so that I can use heavier bullets as necessary. THX Hawkshaw

Around 1960 I had a rifle in .244 Remington (same cartridge as the 6 mm Rem.) built on a Persian 98 standard length Mauser action. No modification to the feed rails was required. It feeds fine. I would suggest you borrow a 700 LA and/or a Browning and try some 6 mm cartriges in it (carefully!!) to see if they will feed OK. 0 -
Sounds like you've already made your decision but I've got to say this. If you're going to use a full length 700 action, why not go with the 25/06? You commented about "using heavier bullets" and the 25/06 adds 20% to the useable bullet weight. Not much diff in the BC and SD between .243@100 grain and .257@120 grain.
There is also the fact that some very good rifles are factory made in 25/06.0 -

i have two 6mm's, one a short action rem 700 varmint and another built on an 03 springfield, i hand load for both and have found no avantage ballistically in the slightly longer springfield action 0 -
I remembered this post when I was in the gun room the other day. My .270 721 Remington happened to be leaning against an ammunition shelf so I tried some 6mm cartridges in the magazine. They fed without a hitch. Since the 721 action is about identical to the 700, I'd expect the cartridges to feed as well from the 700. The only Brownings I have are A-bolts and a BBR and the magazines for those are very cartridge specific so I don't believe those would work. 0 -

The basic concept here is that the cartridge is from an intermediate length design so the 6mm Remington will work in either the Short Action or the Long Action without fail. This is predicated on the cartridge the action was originally chambered for, of course. It will not feed correctly in a SA chambered for the WSM or in a LA chambered for a RUM.
The performance increase by utilizing a LA is debatable due to the fact that the improvement in velocity is negligible in the first place and can be duplicated through changes in several other variables. The gain of 60-100 FPS is insignificant in the overall performance of the rifle especially when it's primary function is for hunting. It can make a subtle difference when long range target shooting is a primary concern.
This same discussion applies to bullet seating as well. While a LA allows for a significant addition to seating space, it's still necessary to maintain at least one caliber of seating depth for the bullet in the neck of the case. Sure it can be less but this is a standard sort of rule of thumb. 6mm bullets just aren't long enough to warrant the use of a 3.340" magazine box when 3.050" works for the longest of the VLD Target Match bullets.
The fact of the matter is that I use a Short Action DBM system which has the spacer removed from the magazines, making the OAL 2.950" for these short and intermediate cartridges. This has proven to be the better arrangement between a standard SA and the LA magazines/actions. But if this is a hunting rifle then the gains from SA to LA will be insignificant basically. Sure you can use the LA to chase the lands if that's what you really want to do, given that the bullet length in the neck will be the final determining factor. But we have pretty much abandoned this practice because of our attention to the alignment of the chamber with the bore of the barrel. Over the life of a barrel in competition, it makes more of a difference with the chamber alignment than being into or close to the lands.
If I truly need an increased velocity for conditions or range, I simply switch rifles and cartridges. There is no substitute for horsepower when the conditions call for it. No one cartridge will be the perfect compromise for all applications. There will be pluses or minuses, pros and cons for each and every combination. Learn to achieve the best balance for your use and get to the range and shoot!
