Colt Python
How can you tell a nickle finish from an ultimate stainless finish? The bluebook lists both and I don't know which one I have. Also how can you tell the year it was made by the serial no.? Does the serial no. give any other info about the gun?

I have a Colt Python polished SS with a 8" barrel. The gun is NIB. all paper work, carrying case, the cylinder has never been rotated. I bought the gun in 1993. gun serial number is PY3985 My question is, what's it worth? Thanks, I appreciate any help...[:D] 0 -
you could check the auction side for completed auctions with your pythons spec's, actual sold pythons will give you a real world value. you can compare yours to those sold as to condition and extras included. 0 -
8" pythons are not as popular as the shorter tubes, but should still bring pretty good money. With all the items you mention probably in the area of $2000 to $3000. 0 -
I looked at the completed auctions, and the prices vary quite a bit.I was surprised by the lack of blued pythons that sold. I thought that the blued versions would have been more popular. 0 -
I did not know the 8" was made in the 60s 0 -
I have an 8" Python that was made in the 80's & I wasn't aware that they had been cateloged until then. I don't have the box or the warrantee card but I don't think the gun cares. 0 -
I used the serial numbers and went to proofhouse.com for the date of manufacture. 0 -
I checked the books for several years and the oldest one that lists a Python with an 8" barrel is 1980. Several years ago I contacted Colt about the DOM of the Python pictured and was told it was made in 1980. So it may be possible that someone at the website mixed an 8 with a 6.

I called Colt yesterday, and found out that the date of manufacture was 1981. 0 -
At an auction today in central Nebraska Several pythons in the $2000.00 - $3500.00 range. 0 -
I believe caliber and finish are important as is having the original box too. Mine 8" barreled Python is nickel and in 38 Special, I was surprised to find it's worth a few $$$. 0
