SEARS OXFORD RED DOT SIGHT
anyone know anything firm about these?
got a non working one at a gun show last week and had never heard of one . "before its time" red dot. work on on 2 AA batteries and is 1" tube diameter. thanks

Never heard of it, though I think its probably pretty safe to say that Sears Roebuck wasn't devising its own cutting-edge firearms technologies.
As they did (and still do) with many other products, they probably used someone elses design and rebranded it. Aimpoint dot type sights for rifles became commercially available in the mid 1970s, and Quik-point sights a few years before that.
The concept of the dot-sight even predates that for many decades. In fact, there were similar reflex-type sights (pre-dating LED technology) from WWII-era military guns.
In this particular case, I think I have a clue. Check out this ad from Field and Stream, Nov 1972:

I have a non working one here. I've had it so long I don't even remember where it came from. Sorry i really don't know anything about them. Mine is an Oxford Lightning Gunsight.
That's the one I have, even got the 3X magnifier option.0 -
The double A battery powered units had problems with maintaining good electrical contact due to recoil. Modern red dots, like the superb ULTRA DOT use button batteries that will take the pounding and keep working. If it does not work look at the contacts in the battery tubes.

I had one, bought on closeout for $10 as the LED sights started coming along. Sold it to a collector of such novelties, I had it on one .22 for a while and it did ok. 0 -
The first person to win the national pistol championship with any kind of Optical sight with a red dot Was a shooter "SPELLING" Pascaraller . I was there and the nex year 25% of Master class shooters had some type of red dot on their pistols . At first they were too heavy for a skinny guy like me . you had to be BPOST size[}:)][;)] But then newer ones kept getting lighter and new battery location about made them Bullet Proof "pun intended" Ultradot is a very good brand I use discontinued GILMORE 32MM and later 35MM my one one my Wad Gun is slide mounted and has real close to 200,000 rounds in use with this one red dot scope. I think the Military for training aerial targets and shotgun shooters were the first to use the OXFORD. 0 -

+1 Had some early Aimpoints on my Contender in 357 Herret. They didn't last more then about 10 shots each.0
